Character Name: Nerissa
Series: The Wolf Among Us
Canon Point: Episode 4
Character Age: Physically she has the appearance of someone in their mid 20s, but truthfully, being a Fable, she's thousands of years old. Going by real life dates, it could be fair to say she was "born" when the story was first published in 1837.
Background: The Wolf Among Us wiki, along with the specific page for Nerissa herself.
Personality: The story that plays out in The Wolf Among Us is seen entirely from Bigby's point of view, so initially the player only has what Nerissa chooses to show Bigby as an understanding of her personality. She comes across as a young woman that's been so beaten down by life that she's just kind of given up, resigned herself to her existence being pretty terrible. She might make faces of disgust and displeasure, but if her pimp degrades her in front of a stranger will she speak up for herself? No. Not when she's got a literal leash around her neck. She just ducks her head and takes it, because she's too afraid to do much else.
Nerissa, along with the other girls working at the Pudding and Pie strip club, have all been forced to wear ribbons that have been enchanted to keep them from talking about what goes on there, and if the ribbons are ever removed their necks will immediately be severed and they'll die. It's a good way to keep the women in line, and Nerissa says herself they've been enslaved, forced to prostitute themselves, to do terrible things to pay down debts they can never quite get out from underneath. It's a vicious cycle, and something Nerissa and her two closest friends had been trying to secretly escape until they were murdered for trying to run away. Nerissa, being the only one of them to survive, is still haunted by their loss.
When asked if her legs are a glamour, a magical spell to hide the fin used to have as the Little Mermaid, she just kind of smiles sadly and says no, those legs are all hers and aren't they pretty? She went through a lot to get them. Not a word about the fact that it feels like walking on knives, just a probing question meant to draw attention to her physical appearance rather than what's actually going on in her head. She jokes around, but in the same bleak way that makes it clear not much about her life at the moment is very humorous. She tries to see the bright side, tries to keep reaching for the light at the end of the tunnel, but there's no mistaking she's at the end of her rope now that she doesn't have Faith and Lily to bolster her. In her own words, she's had to find her way through life on her own, grasping and fumbling in the dark. Without her friends to help her find her way, she doesn't know what to do. There's a kind of weariness to the way that she speaks, and she believes strongly that there are some Fables who are just doomed to a end where they just fade away, forgotten.
Above anything else, even her freedom, the thing that Nerissa wants most is justice for Faith and Lily and it's undeniable that a woman who needs to be protected inspires Bigby's urge to help. She's at a place in her life when she's been knocked down so far there's no question she can't get out of her predicament on her own, and when Bigby shows up to investigate with a clear concern for what happened to Faith and Lily, Nerissa uses that to her advantage. She lets him see glimpses into just how bad it is, gives him just enough information to make it clear Faith and Lily both were just as trapped as she was, and she knows that the crumbs she leaves are things Bigby won't be able to help following up on.
This isn't to say that Nerissa uses Bigby with malicious intentions. At her core Nerissa is a good person who only wants to do the right thing, and she works together with Bigby to do her best to give him all the information that she can, but the spell on her ribbon limits what she can actually tell him. When she skirts a topic, it's not to spite him, it's because she physically cannot tell him. "These lips are sealed" isn't a cute dodge, it's her telling him she's unable to help him with clear explanations. She has to find ways around it, fighting through the compulsion to keep her mouth shut, because she knows she's the only one in any position to point him in the right direction. When he comes asking about what happened to Lily she can't tell him where to look, but she can ask him to buy her services and give him a key to the hotel where he might be able to find some clues. A particularly telling moment about just what kind of person she is when, if Bigby happens to not have any money to keep up the charade of paying for her time, she takes the money out of her own purse to make sure he ends up where he needs to go.
It's not until the finale in episode 5 where the spell is broken that Nerissa finally has the courage to speak her mind, and once there's nothing keeping her quiet she immediately shows a side to herself that demands the chance to have her say, demands the respect and the right to speak after years of being forced to stay silent. There's still a backbone there, but it takes a fair amount to make her really stand up for herself. In time it's something she'll learn to be better at, but because of her canon point she's not going to be quite there yet. She has the potential, but until she can accept that the spell on the ribbon is broken she's still going to be incredibly cautious.
Powers/Abilities: Nerissa has no real special ability beyond the typical Fable ability to live as long as her story is remembered and accelerated healing.
Power Nerfs (if applicable): None necessary!
Inventory: Her clothes and her purse, with half a pack of cigarettes, some makeup, and other non-essentials that will honestly be pretty useless all told. In addition to this is a purple ribbon she wears around her neck at all times.
Incentives: Justice for Faith and Lily will be the ultimate way to keep Nerissa docile, as well as the promise that the spell on her ribbon will be broken and she'll finally get her freedom.
